Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How does the PuriFresh® ERV mount in a window?
The PuriFresh® ERV is a Window Mounted Energy Recovery Ventilator.  The PuriFresh® Window Mounted ERV mounts in a double hung window much like a window mounted air-conditioner, however, it is much lighter and smaller that the typical window mounted air-conditioner. Unlike the typical window mounted air-conditioner, the PuriFresh® Window Mounted ERV does not have expandable side panels to fit any width window. Instead, two corrugated plastic sheets are provided which are cut to the appropriate width to fit the specific widow. This provides better insulation in winter as well as a better air seal.
  2. Is a brace needed for window installation?
No brace is needed.  If you have double hung windows in your home, the PuriFresh® ERV is a truly economical, easy, do-it-yourself way to provide high quality Energy Recovery Ventilation to your home!
  3. Can the PuriFresh® ERV be permanently mounted through a wall?
Yes!  View the manual for more details.
  4. The fresh air blows straight out of the unit.  Can I change its direction?
Plastic deflectors, which attach magnetically to the PuriFresh® ERV, are available at many hardware stores.  These are manufactured for use on the air registers in homes with force air heating or AC systems.  If you are having difficulty obtaining these, let us know, and we will be happy to send you one at a reasonable price.
  5. How are the Energy Transfer Sections cleaned?
The Energy Transfer Sections are cleaned by immersion in warm water, containing any mild dishwashing liquid.  After soaking, they are rinsed by immersion in clean warm water.   After drip-drying on a drain board, they can be returned to the unit where complete drying will occur while the unit runs.
  6. What is the Energy Transfer Section medium made of?
The active medium is made of a thin plastic film substrate.  Silica gel powder is permanently bonded to the film on both sides.  Silica gel is harmless, and, in any case, it does not enter the air stream during use.
  7. Why do I need ventilation?
Air pollution from volatile compounds is much higher indoors. These volatile compounds include radon gas, formaldehyde, solvents from cleaning supplies and beauty supplies, organic compounds emitted by carpets, furniture, paint, insulation, linoleum, vinyl, electronic equipment, etc.  Ventilation is also needed to prevent excess humidity in winter, which can lead to dry rot and mold damage.
  8. How do I know my ventilation is inadequate?
Some signs that you need ventilation in your home are the following:  If your home smells, or if you use air fresheners or air purifiers to reduce or mask odors.   If there is moisture condensation on windows on a cold winter day.
  9. My PuriFresh® ERV still does not reduce indoor humidity enough in winter.  What can I do?
In some cases, energy recovery does not allow enough moisture to escape the home in winter.  We have Heat Transfer Sections, which are not desiccant coated.  Use those in winter, the Energy Transfer Sections the rest of the year.  Contact us to obtain a set.   It is very important to solve your moisture problem to prevent dry rot and mold, so don’t delay.
  10. I live where there are air pollution alerts.  Should I still ventilate?
Yes, but turn off ventilation when there is a high pollution alert and they recommend that you stay indoors.  If pollution peaks at certain hours of the day, put the unit on a timer so that it is off for those hours.  That will actually reduce levels of outside pollutants in your home compared to no ventilation.  Fight for clean air!  Remember, all inside air ultimately comes from outdoors.
  11. Are the Energy Transfer Sections interchangeable with the HEPA Heat Filters of the PuriFresh® HEPA/HRV?
Yes!  If you have a PuriFresh® HEPA Filtered Heat Recovery Ventilator and would like to convert it to an Energy Recovery Ventilator, contact us for a special order of four Energy Transfer Sections.
  12. Is the PuriFresh® Energy Recovery Ventilator available with defrost?
No, not at this time.  Frost typically only begins to form (on the outside of the Energy Transfer Sections) when the temperature drops to around 0° F.  The unit will not be damaged, since the moving parts are all on the warm and dry side of the Energy Transfer Sections.
  13. Will there be a PuriFresh® HEPA Filtered Energy Recovery Ventilator? Yes!  Contact us for details.
