Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How does the PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered HRV mount in a window?
The PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered HRV is a Window Mounted Heat Recovery Ventilator.  The PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered Window Mounted HRV mounts in a double hung window much like a window mounted air-conditioner, however, it is much lighter and smaller that the typical window mounted air-conditioner. Unlike the typical window mounted air-conditioner, the PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered Window Mounted HRV does not have expandable side panels to fit any width window. Instead, two corrugated plastic sheets are provided which are cut to the appropriate width to fit the specific widow. This provides better insulation in winter as well as a better air seal.
  2. Is a brace needed for window installation?
No brace is needed.  If you have double hung windows in your home, the PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered HRV is a truly economical, easy, do-it-yourself way to provide high quality HEPA Filtered Heat Recovery Ventilation to your home!
  3. Can the PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered HRV be mounted through a wall?
Yes!  View the manual for more details.
  4. The fresh air blows straight out of the unit.  Can I change its direction?
Plastic deflectors, which attach magnetically to the PuriFresh® HEPA-Filtered HRV are available at many hardware stores.  These are manufactured for use on the air registers in homes with force air heating or AC systems.  If you are having difficulty obtaining these, let us know, and we will be happy to send you one at a reasonable price.
  5. What is true HEPA filtration?
In true HEPA filtration, 99.97% of all particles 0.3 microns in size are removed from the air. This is verified by tests using a standard 0.3 micron DOP smoke.
  6. What level of HEPA filtration is achieved by PuriFresh®?
The medium (the fiberglass "paper") in the PuriFresh® filters is a true HEPA medium. This medium is pleated and glued into a chipboard box. The glue acts as a seal to prevent any air from circumventing the medium, forcing it all to go through the medium. At our current level of limited production, we cannot guarantee that these glue seals are all perfect.  We have been assured by the filter manufacturer, that the filter, as a unit, will pass a 95% 0.3 micron particle test. That is, the filter, as a unit, will remove at least 95% of all 0.3 micron particles from the air.
  7. How are the HEPA filters replaced?
The HEPA Heat filters are replaced once a year by removing the PuriFresh® unit from the widow. Two screws holding the rear cover are removed. The old filters are slipped out and the new ones put in their place. The rear cover is replaced and the unit is returned to the window. This is an excellent time to clean the window and the outside of the PuriFresh® unit.
  8. Do the HEPA filters need cleaning between replacement?
No! The reciprocating flow of air helps prevent the buildup of large dust particles. The filters are largely self-cleaning. Micron sized particles are trapped in the filters and reduce flow with time. Since only about 1% of the total mass of dust in the air is in this size range, it is easy to see why it will take many-many times longer for the PuriFresh® filters to clog compared to a console HEPA filter in which the flow is in one direction and all the dust collects on one side.
  9. What is the HEPA filter medium made of?
The filter medium is a microscopic fiberglass mat. While it looks like paper, it is not a wood product. It is not damaged by moisture.
  10. Why not just buy a cheaper console HEPA filter and keep the door and widows closed to my room?
If you do that, the room will not receive required ventilation. The American Lung Association (ALA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) all recommend ventilation to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). Only PuriFresh® provides HEPA filtered fresh air year round in a compact easy to install window mounted unit!
  11. Why not just buy a cheaper console HEPA filter and keep a widow open a bit?
This will provide fresh air. The fresh air, in addition to being cold in winter and hot and humid is summer, will enter loaded with particles which will disburse throughout the room before they enter the console HEPA filter. The console HEPA filter will have to clean out these particles after they have entered. Since these particles are continually entering, the air can never be completely cleaned. PuriFresh® cleans the particles out of the fresh air before it enters the room. Only PuriFresh® provides HEPA filtered fresh air directly to the room, year round.
  12. Why do I need ventilation?
Air pollution from volatile compounds is much higher indoors. These volatile compounds include radon gas, formaldehyde, solvents from cleaning supplies and beauty supplies, organic compounds emitted by carpets, furniture, paint, insulation, linoleum, vinyl, electronic equipment, etc.
  13. Why do I need filtration?
Unlike volatile air pollution, which is much higher indoors, particulate concentrations are much higher outdoors. Hence, scrubbing virtually all particles from the outside air, which PuriFresh® does, is very important for healthy indoor air, especially for allergy and asthma suffers.
  14. I live where there are air pollution alerts.  Should I still ventilate?
Yes, but turn off ventilation when there is a high pollution alert and they recommend that you stay indoors.  If pollution peaks at certain hours of the day, put the unit on a timer so that it is off for those hours.  That will actually reduce levels of outside pollutants in your home compared to no ventilation.  Fight for clean air!  Remember, all inside air ultimately comes from outdoors.
